Woman Knifed in Birmingham City Bus Stop Assault Succumbs to Injuries
The female victim who was stabbed to her neck area during a random assault near a bus shelter within Birmingham has passed away, police have confirmed.
The victim, aged 34 years, was targeted in Smallbrook Queensway, right beside the Bullring shopping centre, just prior to 21:00 GMT Friday evening, according to police statements.
The suspect, twenty-one, appeared before Birmingham court Monday morning, facing charges for the attack.
He was previously accused of attempted murder however after the woman's death the charge has been updated to murder.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities stated officers would be in the downtown area through Monday to offer reassurance, while detectives assisted the victim's relatives.
Detectives are appealing any eyewitnesses who may have seen the accused, identified as British citizen of Black ethnicity, reportedly dressed in grey athletic wear, black hat, trainers and rucksack.
Incident Location
The knife attack occurred outside the Bullring shopping centre, across from primary access point of New Street railway station.
Law enforcement confirmed they classified it as "unprovoked attack" with investigators stating they were working to understand why it happened.
Witness Accounts
Shalini Doal, who works nearby, recounted the emergency response after completing her work period at about 22:00 on Friday.
She described the scene as "quite chaotic", and said some of her colleagues heard a commotion at about 21:00.
"A lot of my colleagues use transit services, take the tram... our safety is at risk essentially, in the downtown area."
Another individual, 25, resident of Stoke, said he came to Birmingham fairly regularly visiting his partner who lives in the city, and was concerned about what had happened.
"It makes me worried about my partner," he said.
"She lacks transportation and works at all of the big music venues... considering something completely unprovoked [happened], you know, it's terrible."
