The Heartbreaking Shift Just One Year Has Caused in America

In late October 2024, the situation was entirely distinct. Before the American presidential vote, considerate residents could admit America's significant faults – its inequities and disparity – but they still could identify it as the US. A democratic nation. A place where the rule of law held significance. A nation headed by a dignified and ethical official, notwithstanding his elderly years and declining health.

These days, this autumn, countless Americans barely recognize the country we inhabit. Persons suspected of being unauthorized foreigners are rounded up and shoved into transport, occasionally refused legal rights. The East Wing of the presidential residence – is undergoing demolition to build a lavish ballroom. The president is persecuting his adversaries or supposed enemies and requesting legal authorities surrender an enormous amount of taxpayer money. Uniformed troops are being sent into American cities under fabricated reasons. The defense headquarters, rebranded the Defense Ministry, has – in effect – freed itself of day-to-day journalistic scrutiny during its expenditure of what could amount to close to a trillion USD from citizen taxes. Institutions, law firms, news companies are buckling under the president’s threats, and billionaires are handled as aristocracy.

“The US, just months before its quarter-millennium anniversary as the globe's top democratic nation, has crossed the limit toward dictatorship and fascism,” an American historian, commented in August. “Ultimately, more quickly than I believed likely, it occurred here.”

Each day begins amid recent atrocities. It is hard to comprehend – and painful to realize – how deeply lost we are, and how quickly it occurred.

Yet, we know that Trump was legitimately chosen. Following his profoundly alarming initial presidency and despite the alerts linked to the awareness of the conservative plan – despite the president personally declared plainly he intended to act as an autocrat only on the first day – enough Americans selected him over his Democratic opponent.

As terrifying as the current reality are, it's more daunting to understand that we are just several months under this leadership. Where will another 36 months of this decline leave us? And if that timeframe transforms into an prolonged era, as there is not anyone to restrain this leader from opting that additional tenure is essential, possibly for defense purposes?

Granted, there is still hope. There are congressional elections next year that could bring a different political equilibrium, should Democrats retake either chamber of Congress. There are government representatives who are striving to impose some accountability, such as lawmakers who are launching an investigation into the attempted money grab by federal prosecutors.

And a national vote in the next cycle could initiate our journey to healing just as the prior selection put us on this regrettable path.

There exist millions of Americans marching in the streets across municipalities, as they did recently at democracy demonstrations.

A former official, wrote recently that “the great sleeping giant of America is awakening”, exactly as before following the Red Scare in that decade or amid anti-war demonstrations or during the seventies crisis.

In those instances, the unstable nation finally returned to balance.

The author states he understands the signals of that revival and sees it happening now. For proof, he points to the widespread marches, the extensive, cross-party resistance against a personality's dismissal and the near-unanimous refusal by journalists to accept the defense department’s demands they only publish approved content.

“The sleeping giant always remains dormant before certain corruption grows too toxic, a particular deed so contemptuous of societal benefit, certain violence so disruptive, that he is compelled except to rise.”

It's a positive outlook, and I value the author's seasoned opinion. Perhaps he will turn out correct.

At the same time, the big questions persist: can America regain its footing? Can it retrieve its status globally and its devotion to the rule of law?

Or do we need to admit that the 250-year-old experiment functioned for a period, and then – suddenly, utterly – failed?

My negative thoughts suggests that the second option is accurate; that all may indeed be gone. My optimistic spirit, however, convinces me that we have to attempt, by any means possible.

Personally, as a media critic, that involves encouraging reporters to live up, more fully, to their purpose of holding power to account. For others, it may be working on congressional campaigns, or organizing rallies, or discovering methods to defend ballot privileges.

Not even one year prior, we lived in a separate situation. A year from now? Or in several years? The fact is, we don’t know. All we can do is to attempt to not give up.

What’s Giving Me Hope Now
