Hazbin Hotel's Creator Reveals Alastor and Rosie's Backstory Is a Major Teaser for Season Three

Dedicated fans of the show finally received a long-awaited backstory in the second season's fourth episode, titled “It's a Deal.” This installment will probably spark a lot of discussion and raise numerous questions about the essence of a certain demonic Overlord who appears far more powerful than any character previously understood. The new revelations include a look into the human life of a beloved character before his death and sentence to the underworld.

A Major Tease for Upcoming Installments

The series creator disclosed an inside detail about “It's a Deal” – it serves as a huge hint for the third season. She also offered further details into the methodology of creating the human versions of her infernal cartoon figures.

In the episode, a flashback reveals that popular personality Alastor the Radio Demon was a mass murderer in his human life. Being aware he was headed to the underworld, he made contact with the afterlife beforehand to obtain a powerful role there. The charismatic leader, who leads the cannibal faction in Hell, vowed Alastor he would become “the most powerful Condemned Soul in Hell” in exchange for his eternal spirit.

This raises the question: How is Rosie powerful enough to elevate Alastor above all other Demonic Sinners?

“The Rosie and Alastor deal is the first stepping stone in a larger narrative that involves a great deal, moving into the third season,” the showrunner states. “Clearly that is a perfect question: How is she that powerful? The answer might be various factors, but the answer is in season three. I am thrilled for fans to see it.”

There’s no telling how long the audience will have to wait for Hazbin Hotel’s third season. The studios have approved seasons 3 and 4, but the creator often remarks that animation is a time-consuming endeavor, and later seasons have no release dates yet. Nevertheless, she says withholding on those details is an important part of keeping season 2’s focus where it belongs.

“The difficulty of any kind of deal with demons, or stories that have enigmas, is providing the audience sufficient clues to be like, Something's up here, and then unveiling that as we go, and allowing that be satisfying,” she comments. “So I am quite eager.”

Mysteries Resolved in Season 3

The creator assures that season 3 will tackle the questions followers have been posing, like why the cannibal leader ordered Alastor to disappear for seven years, which weakened his influence in the infernal realm.

“The whole seven years, and the pacts these humans are doing, and all that — it contributes to a larger story,” she says.

Meanwhile, the Rosie/Alastor backstory episode offers a further look into how the main characters of Demonic Sinners looked like as mortals, the second after seeing Sir Pentious’ Victorian-era human form in episode 2. She explains that a lot of thought was put into the visual creation of these forms.

“The human versions of the characters hold so much weight,” she notes. “They range from appearing quite distinct from their demon form to looking very similar. With the first character, the first one we see, there was some internal discussion internally between choosing something that symbolizes the personality, versus selecting an option that's historically correct. We opted for creating a design that just seemed like it was him.”

She mentions the biggest debate over Pentious’ human design was his lengthy locks: “We were like, ‘No one typically had extended hair of that style in that historical period.’ But simultaneously, we believe the outline is extremely crucial, and we also just felt he appeared attractive. We were like, ‘This seems correct.’ We sort of gave the excuse that he lived in seclusion, so he just allowed his hair to lengthen. So there is always a solution. As we create the human versions of these characters […] it's such a fun thing to explore and determine. I'm excited for fans to see more of the appearances of the human versions.”
