Details of the Acquisition Agreement
The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had entered into an agreement to acquire the island resort from the Oatley family, subject to standard approvals from regulators.
The family issued a comment saying they were pleased with the change in ownership of an island that holds a “special place in the hearts of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Size and Amenities
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, the island spans over 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the area is developed, featuring a significant range of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty dining and drinking venues
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A marina and a functioning airport
The resort is noted as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, sustaining a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a wide network of local partners, suppliers, and area businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The late Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsundays.
The island's development boom first began in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and modest accommodations that hosted domestic holidaymakers from the outback and from the south.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Regional Background
The acquiring firm has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in several countries, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro Indigenous people. Its name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the HMS Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
