Federal Government Poised to Send Dozens Government Officers to San Francisco

The Trump administration appeared poised on Wednesday to deploy dozens of federal agents to the northern California for a large-scale border security initiative, sparking condemnation from local politicians.

Information of the Operation

Information of the mission were still emerging, but it will reportedly involve more than 100 federal agents, based on information. The agents are scheduled to begin utilizing the Coast Guard facility in the East Bay, across the bay from San Francisco. It was still uncertain whether national guard troops would participate.

Political Response

The operation follows weeks of statements by the administration to target the progressive municipality. The state's leader Gavin Newsom denounced the move, calling it “straight from the dictator’s handbook”.

“He deploys masked men, he dispatches customs officers, he sends out ICE, he instills worry and terror in the neighborhood so that he can take credit for solving that by dispatching the national guard,” Newsom said. “This is no different than the arsonist fighting the inferno.”

Municipal Preparation

San Francisco is the most recent metropolitan center focused on by the administration's initiative of mass immigration arrests. The operation is expected to trigger a confrontation between the White House and city officials who have vowed to prevent armed border control in the city.

San Franciscans have been readying for months for Trump to make good on frequent statements to dispatch personnel to the city. At a Wednesday afternoon press conference, San Francisco’s municipal chief emphasized that the city was ready.

“Over recent weeks, we have been expecting the possibility of an impending federal deployment in our city,” said the mayor, explaining that he had implemented additional measures on Wednesday to “strengthen the city’s protection of our foreign-born residents, and guarantee our departments are organized before any national intervention.”

Legal Context

Regardless of court battles to missions in a several municipalities, including the Windy City, the Pacific Northwest and Los Angeles, Trump has declared “complete control” to dispatch the state troops in cities, citing the federal statute which allows presidents certain rights to send forces on American territory.

Community Response

The governor, who was formerly as San Francisco’s mayor – had vowed to intervene “without delay” to a mission in the city. “The idea that the national administration can deploy troops into our cities with no justification grounded in reality, no monitoring, no answerability, no respect for regional control – it’s a direct assault on the judicial framework,” he said on Wednesday.

Public associations, including social justice nonprofits formed in the first Trump administration, have organized to quickly mobilize a public demonstration in the city, as well as vigils at local libraries.

Community Impact

In San Francisco’s Mission area, a mostly Latin American community, city supervisor stated to media last week she and her voters had been bracing for this time. “The point that people stop going to work, when anyone Black or brown cannot move about freely without the fear of national personnel targeting based on race and detaining them, the point when families keep children home, are too scared to go to the food market or medical provider,” she said. “Our ongoing preparations in the Mission is essentially a shutdown the scale of which we have not experienced since the health crisis.”

Military Condition

About several hundred out of four thousand California military personnel stay under federal control under an directive from Trump. About two hundred of them had been sent to the Pacific Northwest, where they were staying in standby amid a legal battle over their assignment.

This period, Newsom said he had called the state military personnel under his control to manage charity kitchens amid the administrative stoppage.
