FAI Backs Motion Seeking European Football Ban on Israeli Teams

Ireland's football governing body has voted in favor to submit a formal motion to Uefa, calling for the exclusion of Israeli football from continental team and national tournaments.

Basis of the Proposed Ban

The resolution, that had been proposed by Irish side Bohemians, cited claimed violations by the Israel Football Association of two important European football regulations.

  • Inability to implement and enforce an proper anti-racism policy.
  • Establishment of clubs in disputed territories without the consent of the Palestinian Football Association.

Vote Outcome and Future Actions

According to an announcement from the FAI, the proposal was backed by 74 votes, with seven opposed and 2 abstentions.

They intends to formally submit this motion to the Uefa executive committee, seeking the immediate suspension of the Israel Football Association from European tournaments.

In an extraordinary general meeting of the FAI, an ordinary resolution was put to delegates. It passed by a large margin.

Previous Uefa Considerations

Uefa had previously paused intentions to exclude Israeli football at the close of last month, following the revealing of a US peace proposal for the region.

Although Uefa never officially confirmed contemplating an extraordinary meeting on the issue, plans were believed to be quite advanced.

Global Context

The FAI move comes after comparable demands in September from the heads of both Turkey and Norway's football associations for Israel's suspension from international competition.

These appeals were issued after UN specialists urged Fifa and Uefa to suspend Israel, referencing a UN investigation that claimed Israel of acts of genocide during the war in Gaza.

Israel has denied these claims and labeled the report as scandalous.

Potential Ramifications

If Uefa decide to ban Israel, it would likely create tension with the United States government – joint hosts for the 2026 World Cup – which strongly opposes such an action.

Even though Uefa has the authority to exclude Israeli teams from European competitions, it might not be able to prevent them from competing in World Cup qualifiers, which is governed by Fifa.
