Former FBI chief James Comey has entered an innocent plea to providing misleading information to congressional representatives and hindering a lawmaking procedure.

Mr Comey's attorney filed the plea acting as his counsel in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning.

His attorney declared he would try to have the proceedings thrown out for various reasons including that his client, a detractor of former President Trump, was being targeted.

The former director was formally accused soon after the former president urged his chief prosecutor to proceed against him.

Legal Proceedings

During the hearing on Wednesday, his attorney the legal representative informed the magistrate they intended to submit several legal requests to throw out the case before a court case, claiming the legal action was retaliatory and that a US attorney was improperly designated to take over the legal matter.

James Comey's legal matter was first managed by a Virginia prosecutor, who stepped down under scrutiny from the former president after his investigation into another opponent - NY AG Letitia James - did not succeed to file indictments.

Legal Setting

The former director came across in positive mood as he walked into the legal venue on Wednesday, chatting with his legal team and making jokes. He was supported by his wife, his wife and offspring his daughter, a US lawyer who the Trump administration recently fired.

Following the reading to the judge state his rights and the pair of allegations against him in legal proceedings on mid-week, the defendant was questioned if he grasped the charges.

"Yes your honour. Appreciate it," he informed the judge.

Previous Events

The former director was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013-2017 and was terminated about four months into Donald Trump's initial presidency as commander-in-chief. At the period, Mr Comey was overseeing an investigation into foreign election meddling and whether there were any relationships between Moscow and the presidential campaign.

During his tenure, the director sparked a negative reaction from the Democratic party when he declared just days before the national vote that he was investigating Democratic candidate Clinton's use of a private email server. Legal actions against Hillary Clinton were not pursued, leading to negative feedback from Republicans as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Prosecutors assert Mr Comey lied to US lawmakers during a legislative proceeding in recent years when he was being questioned about both the Clinton investigation as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They claim he misled the Senate by saying he had not permitted an individual at the agency to release to journalistic entities details about the government examinations.

Prosecutors also charge Mr Comey of "wrongfully trying to sway, block and delay" the committee by making false statements to it.

Personal Comments

Via social media Mr Comey shared to his Instagram after he was indicted, he declared he was wrongly accused and alleged Donald Trump of conducting himself like a "autocrat".

"Our household have understood for a long time that there are costs to challenging Donald Trump," he stated. "We will not live on our bended knee."
"I am not guilty," he stated further. "Therefore proceed with a legal proceeding."

These allegations against the former director surfaced after Trump published on digital channels insisting on his top legal official, Pam Bondi, prosecute James Comey and other people.
