The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
