Courageous Rail Employee Suffers Critical Wounds Amid Mass Knife Incident on Express Train
A courageous train staff member who stepped in to save travelers during a mass stabbing attack on a high-speed train has sustained critical wounds, authorities stated on Sunday.
Details of the Frightening Event
CCTV footage allegedly shows the staff member attempting to halt the assailant as the train journeyed between Peterborough and another station in the county. Witnesses recounted a frightening 14-minute period after the train left Peterborough, with bloodied passengers running through carriages.
The individual, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, remains in custody for interrogation. Police declared a significant incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.
Emergency Reaction and Aftermath
The event on the weekend led to 11 people being treated in medical facilities after the train made an unplanned stop at the station in Huntingdon. Several individuals have since been discharged from hospital.
A witness recorded the suspect waving a big knife and being shot with a stun device as he confronted officers on the station. He was reportedly heard yelling, "End my life, kill me."
“This awful event has created broad consequences. Our sympathies go out to the injured and their loved ones – especially the courageous employee of rail staff whose relatives are being assisted by trained personnel,” said a senior law enforcement official.
Union Reaction and Calls for Measures
Train associations were swift to praise employees and demand increased measures. One labor official said he would be “requesting immediate meetings with government, rail employers and police to guarantee that we have the strongest possible assistance, tools and effective procedures in operation”.
A different union leader encouraged the train operator and authorities “to act swiftly to review security, to support the affected workers, and to make sure that no incident like this happens again”.
Driver Praised for Rapid Thinking
The train driver who stopped the train at Huntingdon was described as being “deeply affected” but “well”, and has been commended by union officials for doing “exactly the right thing”.
“The driver did not halt the service in the center of two stations where it’s clearly challenging for the emergency services to access, but he carried on going until he got to Huntingdon, where the assistance was almost already there,” explained a union representative.

Authorities stated they received the initial distress reports at 7:39 pm, and the service was forced to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
One observer described at first wondering if the situation was a Halloween joke, but quickly realized from people's faces that it was real.
Police have stated there is nothing to indicate the event was a terrorist incident and have asked the public to provide with any additional details.
Rail services on the affected line are expected to have delays until the following day, with travelers advised to defer their travel where feasible.
