At least 64 Dead in Rio de Janeiro's Biggest Law Enforcement Operation on Organized Crime

No less than 64 people lost their lives in a police operation against the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the biggest and most lethal operation in the area's past.

Four police officers were among those killed during the security mission in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials said. Over 80 suspects were arrested.

Fierce clashes erupted when about 2,500 security personnel initiated the operation on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho reacted using armed resistance, igniting obstacles and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives confirmed.

The International human rights organization expressed being "horrified" by the law enforcement raid, calling for "prompt and effective investigations".

Mission Consequences

The area of favelas near Rio's airport is considered to be the headquarters of a major illegal networks.

State officials confirmed at least 50 of the deceased were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Numerous individuals were injured, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Community Response

Residents have compared the mountainous region - housing around 300,000 residents - to a "war zone" since the operation began.

Roads remain closed throughout the region.

Organized Crime Spread

The criminal network has been growing their territory across the Rio state, expanding narcotics distribution networks and power in the informal settlements.

Local law enforcement reported in excess of 200kg (441lb) of drugs were confiscated in the operation, together with multiple guns.

The combined action by civil and military police comes after a twelve-month inquiry.

Many of the individuals are considered members of a faction from the northern region who are presently concealed in the metropolitan area.
